Expert Allergy and Immunology Care at Sunshine Allergy

What is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing helps identify the substances (allergens) that trigger your symptoms—such as sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, rashes, coughing, or asthma symptoms. Testing provides clear answers so your provider can create the best treatment plan for you.

Why Is Allergy Testing Helpful?

  • Pinpoints what you’re allergic to
  • Helps guide treatment options
  • Reduces long-term allergy symptoms
  • Determines if you are a candidate for allergy immunotherapy (shots or SLIT drops)

Types of Allergy Tests

1. Skin Prick Test

A small amount of allergen is placed on your skin (usually the arm or back), and the skin is lightly pricked.
Results: In 15–20 minutes.
What you’ll see: Small red bumps if you’re allergic.

2. Intradermal Test

A tiny amount of allergen is injected just under the skin.
Used for: Insect venom, medication allergies, or when prick testing is unclear.

Common Allergens We Test For

Environmental: Trees, grasses, weeds, molds, dust mites, cats, dogs, feathers, cockroach
Food: Milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish
Other: Insect stings, penicillin, latex

What to Expect During Testing

  1. Your provider will review your symptoms and medical history
  2. Allergens are placed on or under the skin (depending on the test)
  3. You’ll wait 15–20 minutes for reactions                                                                                                                            · Your provider will measure and interpret results                                                                                                          · Results will be explained at your next office visit
