ASTHMA MANAGEMENT

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition that makes the airways in your lungs inflamed and sensitive. When triggered, these airways narrow, causing difficulty breathing.


Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Coughing(often at night or early morning)

What Causes Asthma Flare-Ups?

Flare-ups happen when something irritates your airways.


Common Triggers

  • Allergens(pollen, dust mites, pets, mold)
  • Respiratory infections
  • Exercise
  • Smoke, perfumes, or strong odors
  • Weather changes
  • Stress
  • Air pollution

Knowing your triggers is one of the most important steps in controlling asthma.

Your provider may give you a personalized plan with Green, Yellow, and Red Zones to guide daily management.                                                     


Green Zone – Good Control

  • No symptoms
  • Sleeping well
  • Normal activity
  • Continue daily controller medications.

  • Continue daily controller medications.                                                                                                             Yellow Zone – Caution
  • Mild symptoms
  • Needing rescue inhaler more often
    • Use rescue inhaler and follow your plan’s next steps.


Red Zone – Emergency

  • Severe symptoms
  • Trouble speaking
  • Bluish lips
  • Rescue inhaler not helping
    • Use rescue medication and seek medical care immediately.
