aLLERGY TREATMENTS

ALLERGY SHOTS

Allergy shots, also called subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), are a long-term treatment that helps reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms by training the immune system to become less sensitive to specific allergens.

HOW ALLERGY SHOTS WORK

Allergy shots contain small, controlled amounts of the allergens you are allergic to. They are injected into the upper arm on a regular schedule. Over time, the dose is gradually increased until you reach a maintenance level. With consistent treatment, your immune system becomes more tolerant, leading to fewer symptoms.

SUBLINGUAL IMMUNOTHERAPY DROPS

Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) is an allergy treatment that uses liquid drops placed under the tongue to gradually desensitize your immune system to the allergens that trigger your symptoms. Over time, SLIT reduces your body’s allergic response—leading to fewer symptoms and long-term relief.

SLIT is an alternative to allergy shots and is especially helpful for patients who want a needle-free, at-home option.

HOW SLIT WORKS

  1. Daily      Drops Under the Tongue
You place a small dose of allergen extract under your tongue once a day.
  2. Absorption      Through the Oral Mucosa
The area under the tongue is rich in immune-active cells. These cells      absorb the allergen and train the immune system to react less.
  3. Gradual      Dose Increases
Your treatment starts with low doses that gradually increase until you      reach a “maintenance” level.
  4. Long-Term      Immune Tolerance
With consistent daily dosing, most patients experience fewer allergy      symptoms and reduced reliance on medications.

WHAT BOTH SCIT AND SLIT TREAT

Allergy shots or drops are commonly used for:

  • Seasonal allergens (tree, grass, and weed pollens)
  • Pet dander
  • Dust mites
  • Mold
  • Insect venom allergies
  • Some cases of allergic asthma and chronic sinus issues
